A LITTLE SOMETHING TO READ

Story & history

A sweet name with a palace legend

Ta si mi means “it is like honey.” A popular tale has Empress Dowager Cixi giving that name to a sweet lamb dish she enjoyed, but this is a naming legend, not a proven origin. The dish became part of Beijing’s halal restaurant tradition. Its honey-like sweetness can come from sugar and sweet bean sauce rather than honey itself.
