Choose the sauce as well as the food
Dan dan noodles and red-oil wontons bring different textures, but both can arrive with assertive seasoning. A sweet-sounding name does not establish a mild dish. If you want less heat, ask about the sauce before ordering rather than assuming it can always be left out.
Make room for a shared dish
Mapo tofu and fu qi fei pian offer very different textures: tofu in sauce versus a sliced cold dish. Look at the actual meat and offal ingredients before choosing. Bobo chicken is associated with Leshan and the wider Sichuan food tradition; it is a regional comparison, not a claim of Chengdu origin.
Zhong pork dumplings in chili oil · 钟水饺
Thin boiled dumplings hold a finely worked pork filling and arrive dressed with chili oil, seasoned soy sauce and garlic. The red-oil version balances savory pork with sweetness and chili fragrance. The filling is meat-focused rather than a pork-and-vegetable mixture.

Tian shui mian · 甜水面
Long Chaoshou · 龙抄手
Long Chaoshou is a named Chengdu brand. Ask about clear-broth or chili-oil wontons. The linked red-oil wonton guide describes the general dish, not that brand's product.
Chengdu brown-sugar rice balls · 糖油果子
Small fried glutinous-rice-flour balls glazed with brown sugar and scattered with sesame. This unfilled Chengdu version is commonly served on skewers.
Contains sesame. Sticky rice dough, hot sugar and sharp skewers need care; sweetness does not make this suitable for every child.

Lai black-sesame tangyuan · 赖汤圆
Chengdu rice dumplings with a sweet black-sesame filling. This traditional version uses lard and wheat flour in the filling.
Contains sesame, wheat and pork fat. The sticky skin and hot filling need care, especially for young children.
Chengdu maocai hotpot bowl · 冒菜
Maocai is a ready-cooked bowl of selected ingredients in seasoned broth. This red-broth example combines beef, tofu, lotus root, potato, wood-ear fungus and leafy greens; the selection is flexible.
This example contains beef and soy. The base and marinade may contain wheat and other allergens; cooking wine is used. Confirm the full base and toppings if avoiding particular ingredients.
Before you order
- Check fillings, broth and sauces as well as the main ingredient.
