What “Xiaodiao” means in Beijing pear soup

This account describes a tradition or story, rather than an established historical fact.

One circulating tale links “Xiaodiao” (“small diao”) to a copper kettle used to measure pear soup: one diao was said to equal one kettle. Another account says the warm drink was sold outside Beijing opera theaters, where audiences bought it after a performance.
