The Courtship Story Behind Guiyang’s Grilled Tofu Pockets

The Chinese nickname liàn’ài dòufuguǒ (恋爱豆腐果) literally reads “love-tofu-fruit,” but the dish itself is grilled tofu. Guiyang tellings connect its romantic name with young people meeting over street-stall snacks. One wartime version places a Zhang family’s tofu stall near Pengjiaqiao on an evacuation route used during air raids, where some young people ate and talked.
