A LITTLE SOMETHING TO READ

Story & history

Fuling youlaozao, a New Year sweet tied to family care

This account describes a tradition or story, rather than an established historical fact.

Fuling youlaozao is a rich cooked sweet made by frying fermented glutinous rice with lard, peanuts, walnuts, sesame and candied fruit. One local account traces it to Lunar New Year 1799: when a family with a new baby welcomed many visitors, the cook mixed some tangyuan filling into the fermented rice and eggs prepared for the mother, then shared the improvised bowl with the guests. The dish is also remembered as something families made for women during zuoyuezi, the first month of rest after childbirth. That account links a celebratory sweet with care for a new mother; it is food history, not medical advice.
