Story & history

Wanning’s Hou’an Noodles as “Dragon Whiskers”

Local history places Hou’an noodle-making as far back as the Song period. In Wanning, a calendar custom connects the noodles to the second day of the second lunar month: people say “shave the dragon’s head, eat dragon whiskers,” wishing for good fortune and well-being. Here, “dragon whiskers” means Hou’an noodles. This custom is reported for Wanning, not as a required ritual across Hainan.
