Story & history

Why Beijing sour-plum drinks can taste different

Beijing’s summer sour-plum drink comes in more than one style. In 2019, restaurants commonly simmered their own versions, while bottled brands varied recipes. Jiulongzhai’s bottled suanmeitang was known for a distinctive toasted note that many people favored. So “sour-plum drink” does not promise one fixed flavor: this 400 ml bottle is a branded take, and a restaurant’s house brew may taste different.
