Taiwan night markets: choose one evening route, not a checklist

Start with the city where you will sleep. A night market is an evening food stop, so compare the route back, weather and how much walking you want before choosing one. The two Taipei examples below offer a concrete starting point; they are not a ranking of every market in Taiwan.

Raohe: an evening in Songshan

Begin around Songshan station and Ciyou Temple, then walk along Raohe Street. Look through the menu boards before ordering. Plan a small savory dish first, a second stop only if you are hungry, and a drink or dessert afterward. The separate Raohe guide explains the walking sequence.

Ningxia: keep the evening compact

Use the MRT to Shuanglian and follow the current official walking directions to Ningxia Road. Start by looking through the food options, then choose a meal and leave room for one snack. Make this the main evening stop rather than adding another market across the city.

Ordering and sharing

Read the actual portion and price before paying, and ask which fillings or sauces are included. Shared snacks let you compare more than one dish without buying a full meal at every stop. Ask before changing an order for an allergy; a familiar food name does not establish its ingredients.

Before you leave

Check the official market information, weather and your return transport for the date of your visit. Individual businesses can differ from the market's general opening window. Save the market name and your return station, and have an indoor meal option if the evening becomes too wet.

Find a dish you would like to try

For dinner, look for a rice bowl such as lu rou fan or a noodle soup before adding snacks. A hujiao bing (pepper bun) is a filling savory option; compare its meat filling and pepper level before ordering. For something lighter afterward, consider aiyu jelly. Use the dish cards below to recognize these options, then choose from the menus you find on your route.

Before you order

  • Check fillings, broth and sauces as well as the main ingredient.
  • Ask about the serving size before ordering several dishes.
